Type locality: “Nord-Amerika”, “America septentrionali" (in error)  
Reproductionoviparous. 
TypesSyntypes: unlocated; possibly in the Mannheim Museum and Leverian Museum according to R. Bour (pers. comm., cited in Iverson 1992: 272) 
Diagnosis 
CommentType species: Kinixys castanea BELL 1827 is the type species of the genus Kinixys BELL 1827: 398.

EtymologyNamed after Latin erosus = gnawed off, eaten into; an allusion to the anterior plates of the plastron which have a 'scooped-out' shape.

The genus was named after Greek kineo = I move and ixus = the back, the waist; an allusion to the rear part of the carapace, which is hinged and can move up and down. (Gotch 1986)
