Acanthodactylus schreiberi ataturi YALÇINKAYA & GÖÇMEN 2012
ataturi: Turkey (Anatolia); Type locality: Botaş-Adana, Turkey, 4 m elevation. May have been introduced from Cyprus (Tamar et al. 2014).
|Types||Holotype: IRSNB ? (probably in Brussels Museum fide Salvador 1982).|
Lectotype: SMF 13633 [syriacus]
|Diagnosis||Description: The vertebral dark stripe is simple in A. opheodurus but forked in A. boskianus. The vertebral stripe is forked but light-colored in two geographically adjacent related taxa, A. b. boskianus (Daudin, 1802) of northern Egypt and A. schreiberi syriacus Boettger, 1878 of coastal Israel.|
|Comment||Synonymy: TAMAR et al. 2014 synonymized syriacus with asper and ataturi with schreiberi.|
Distribution: A. s. syriacus does NOT occur in Syria. This name was given when ‘Syria’ included also parts of the modern states of Israel and Lebanon (Martens 1997). Tamar et al. 2014 conclude that A. schreiberi is restricted to Cyprus and Turkey, reduced to a single form, and that the populations in Lebanon and Israel belong to A. b. asper. Reports of A. schreiberi from Jarmo, Iraq (REED & MARX 1959) were interpreted as being A. boskianus by SALVADOR 1982.
Phylogenetics: A. schreiberi nested within A. b. asper, and the subspecies A. schreiberi syriacus nested within a distinct lineage of A. b. asper (Tamar et al. 2014)
|Etymology||Named after Egid Schreiber (1836-1913), Austrian-born zoologist. A. s ataturi is derived from the surname of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kutsay Atatür, who had contributed extensively to the herpetological knowledge of Turkey.|
