Diagnosis
CommentSynonymy: Heimes 2016 lists Adelphicos quadrivirgatum newmanorum as synonym and subspecies of Adelphicos q. quadrivirgatum JAN 1862.

Relative abundance in Honduras: infrequent

Subspecies: Adelphicos quadrivirgatum visoninum (COPE 1866) is now considered a valid species.

Type species: Adelphicos quadrivirgatus JAN 1862 is the type species of the genus Adelphicos JAN 1862.

Nomenclature: Jan obviously treated Adelphicos as a noun in the nominative singular when he proposed it, and he considered it neuter because of his use of the spelling quadrivirgatum for the name of the specific epithet. But in conformation with ICZN rules (1985, Art. 32g), the original spelling is not incorrect and therefore cannot be changed, and since gender is not inherent in the original spelling itself, Jan's (1862) treatment of it as neuter has to be accepted as establishment of gender; thus A.quadrivirgatum is the correct spelling of Jan's name, and Cope's Adelphicus is an unjustified emendation and junior objective synonym of Adelphicos (ICZN, 1985, Art. 33b [iii]) [LaDuc 1985].

Diet: Adelphicos feed mostly on earthworms (Santos et al. 2017 and references therein).

Distribution: not in Yucatan state (Mexico), fide Gonzalez-Sanchez et al. 2017.
EtymologyThe specific epithet comes from the Latin words quadri- and virga, meaning "four stripes." Adelphicos is neuter, therefore quadrivirgatum is the correct epithet (LaDuc, 1995).

The genus was named after Greek "adelphikos", an adverb ("brotherly," Brown, 1956: 69). The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1985, Art. 11g) requires that generic names be nouns or treated as nouns.
