calvata: Mississippi; Type locality: Pearl River, Roses Bluff, 14 mi E Jackson, Rankin County, Mississippi; W. F. Childers; August 25, 1952.

Type locality: "Newharmony, sur le Wabash" (=New Harmony, Wabash River), Posey County, Indiana, USA  
Reproductionoviparous. KUZMIN (2002) reported a hybrid between Apalone mutica and Pelodiscus sinensis. 
TypesLectotype: MNHN-RA 8813; paralectotypes: MNHN-RA 0564, MNHN-RA 4143 and MNHN-RA 8814 accordintg to Bour et al. 1995. Syntypes: MNHN 564, 4143, 7977 (is an older number for MNHN-RA 8813), 8813 (formerly 787), and 8814 (formerly 788); MNHN 8813 designated lectotype by Webb (1962: 534, 536). See Bour et al. 1995
Holotype: INHS (= UIMNH) 31071; paratype: KU [calvata] 
Diagnosis 
CommentHabitat: freshwater (rivers and tributaries, lakes) 
EtymologyNamed after Latin muticus = curtailed, unarmed, referring to the lack of tubercles on front edge of carapace.
