Type locality: 23° 04' N, 57° 46' E, about 1900 m elevation, Saiq Plateau, Jebel Akhdar, Sultanate of Oman.

TypesHolotype: BMNH 1992.157, adult male Paratypes. BMNH 1992.158 and BMNH 1992.159, adult male and adult female, respectively. Collection data as for the type. BMNH 1992.160 adult female, Bani Habib, 23°04'N, 57°36'E,Saiq Plateau, 1800 m on 12 September 1991. BMNH 1992.161, female, Wadi Duway- khilah, 23°04'N, 57°43'E, Saiq plateau, 1900 m on 12 September 1991. 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: (1) Small (up to about 40 mm from snout to vent); (2) scales across supraorbital region coarse, as are those on snout (9-11 between postnasal scale and orbit, 12-14 across snout at level of third upper labials); (3) large dorsal tubercles present on back (14 longitudinal rows at mid-body), (4) on occiput, (5) on upper fore limb, and elsewhere; (6) sub tibial scales coarse; (7) digital scansors not extending well beyond claws; (8) phalanges in fourth toe reduced to four; (9) cloacal tubercle small; (10) tail tip laterally compressed and strongly expanded vertically; (11) a single transverse row of dorsal tubercles at the posterior edge of each tail segment; (12) subcaudal series of expanded scales not reaching vent area anteriorly; (13) dorsum without a pattern of narrow dark transverse bars in alcohol; (14) tail colour not sexually dimorphic, with a series of dark transverse bars that (15) extend ventrally. 
CommentPhylogenetics: A. montanus is composed of a western and an eastern lineage (Tamar et al. 2018). 
EtymologyNamed after Latin “montanus”, meaning “pertaining to mountains.
