Type locality: Campbell Bay, Great Nicobar Island, India.

TypesHolotype: ZSI 22455 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: (Partly after Tiwari and Biswas, 1973; Biswas, 1984). A slender limbed species with a SVL of 72 - 80 mm, and a long tail [254-271 mm (343-352% of SVL)]. Tympanum about half diameter of orbit or little more. Supraocular scales large and flat, not keeled, seven compressed scales on temple behind supercilium. Nuchal crest indicated by 12-14 small compressed and erect triangular scales, dorsal crest present extending to tail. Gular region covered with keeled scales, smaller than ventrals. Body scales small, strongly keeled, in 68-71 midbody scale rows, 5-6 uppermost scale rows pointing upward others directed downwards. Ventrals about 5 times larger than dorsals, strongly keeled. Fifth toe small, smaller than fourth finger. 
Comment 
EtymologyNamed after Jivanayakam Cyril ("J. C.") Daniel (b. 1927), an Indian naturalist interested in herpetology. He joined the Bombay Natural History Society as an assistant to Dr. Salim Ali (1950), eventually becoming its Director and serving in that capacity until his retirement (1991).
