TypesHolotype: BMNH 1946.1.17.86 (58.11.26.7) (P. Russell, June 1788), fide Wallach et al. 2014: 146. According to the BMNH catalogue this is the type of V. trimaculata.
Holotype: NMSL (Colombo Museum) [sinhaleyus]

Subspecies: Calliophis melanurus nigrescens is now considered as a valid species.

Distribution: Possibly in Bhutan (Lenz 2012).
