DistributionS Thailand, West Malaysia (incl. Pulau Pangkor), Natuna Island

Type locality: Larut Hills, Perak (elevation 1500 and 3000 feet).  
Reproductionoviparous (not imputed, fide Zimin et al. 2022) 
TypesType: BMNH 1946.8.13.43 (and possibly additional specimens). 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Gular pouch in males strongly widened distally; dorsals 147-204; hindlimbs 0.85-1.00 times the distance between the limbs; tail length 1.76-2.01 times the snout-vent length; chin yellowish with indistinct darker spots forming a reticulated pattern (Musters 1983: 68). 
CommentSynonymy: Has been considered as a synonym of D. obscurus (e.g. Srichairat et al. 2017) but accepted as valid by others (e.g. Grismer et al. 2011). Not listed by Chan-ard et al. 2015 for Thailand (apparently considering as a synonym of obscurus).

Distribution: see map in Musters 1983: 67 (who showns formosus in Thailand and obscurus in Sumatra and Borneo).

Draco formosus and D. obscurus differ in the degree of distal expansion of the dewlap in males (greatly expanded in D. formosus, unexpanded or only slightly expanded in D. obscurus), in maximum body size (D. formosus reaches 114mm SVL [n=62], whereas D. obscurus reaches only 100 mm SVL [n= 25]), and in several colour pattern features (D. obscurus males lack the dark radial bands on the dorsal patagium that are present in D. formosus males, and have a peach-coloured eye ring that is lacking in D. formosus).
