Etymology | Presumably from the Greek τρι- (= three) and σκάλης (= hoe, but possibly a misinterpretation of the Greek skalis to mean “scale”), which would coincide with the common name (“Three-scaled Groundsnake”), although the common name could also be a misinterpretation of the scientific name; possibly named after the 3 dorsal lines mentioned by Linneaus but it is unclear whether he actually meant scales or something else. Ultimately the meaning is unknown. |
