Synonymy: KÖHLER et al. 2009 synonymized anomala and modesta with typica.

Type species: Geckolepis typicus GRANDIDIER 1867 is the type species of the genus Geckolepis GRANDIDIER 1867.

Diversity: LEMME et al. (2013) described other Confirmed Candidate Species, based on genetic differences, which exhibit only little morphological diversity.

Diagnosis (genus): A genus of the family Gekkonidae that is easily recognized by the large flat imbricate cycloid (fish-scale) body scales that are shed easily—the cycloid scales and most of the underlying dermis can be autotomized; vertical pupil; digits strongly dilated with transverse undivided subdigital lamellae; all digits with a retractile claw; no preanal or femoral pores in males. [from KÖHLER et al. 2009].

Diagnosis: A species of Geckolepis that differs from all other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: innermost pair of large postmental scales do not make substantial contact with each other posterior to the mental scale (Types A, B, C, D), maximum SVL < 57 mm, infralabials to level of anterior margin of eye 2.8–4.6, and body coloration uniform or with thin dark longitudinal lines, but never marked by heavy dark spots. Geckolepis typica can be distinguished from G. maculata by a combination of maximum SVL (< 57 mm vs. < 80 mm), the number of scale rows around the mid body (26–36 vs. 22–30), the arrangement of the postmental scales posterior to the mental scale (Types A, B, C, D vs. Types D, E, F), and dark heavy spotting on body (absent vs. usually present in adults). Geckolepis typica can be distinguished from G. polylepis by a combination of the arrangement of the postmental scales posterior to the mental scale (Types A, B, C, D vs. Type E), maximum SVL (< 57 mm vs. < 51 mm), and the number of infralabials to level of anterior margin of eye (2.8–4.6 vs. 4.0–5.5). [from KÖHLER et al. 2009].
