Type locality: Rancho La Pastilla, ca. 2.5 km west of Dos Aguas, Sierra de Coalcomán, Michoacán, Mexico, 2164 m elevation.

TypesHolotype: UTA R-4404, University of Texas at Arlington Collection of Vertebrates, female, collected 8 July 1974 by J. A. Campbell. Paratypes: AMNH, 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Distinguished from other members of the genus by the following combination of characteristics:15 rows of smooth dorsal scales throughout body except for weakly keeled scales in region above vent; no anterior temporal; snout elongate in region of internasalsand nasals, combined length of nasals approximatelyequal to length of loreal; dorsum dark brown, lighter laterally; venter creamish-white; sum of ventrals and subcaudals158 to 171; anterior tip of maxilla toothless.

EtymologyNamed after Emeritus Professor Dr. William Frank "Billy" Pyburn (1927-2007), who founded in 1956 the specimen collection at the University of Texas, Arlington, that became the Amphibian and Reptile Diversity Research Center.
