Diagnosis
CommentNot reported from Benin according to ULLENBRUCH et al. 2010.

Type species: Heterolepis poensis SMITH 1849: 55 is the type species of the genus Mehelya CSIKI 1903.

Phylogenetics: Broadley et al. 2018 included 5 species in Mehelya, although they had only DNA data for M. poensis and stenophthalmus, hence the other 3 are included provisionally, namely M. egbensis, gabouensis, and laurenti. M. egbensis and gabouensis do not fit their generic diagnosis either, hence we leave these species in Gonionotophis for the time being.

Revised generic description (Mehelya): Maxillary and dentary bones bent inwards anteriorly; the 8 anterior maxillary teeth increasing in size posteriorly, followed after a diastema by 15–26 very small teeth; anterior mandibular teeth increasing in size, the eighth to tenth largest. Head very distinct from neck, much depressed; eye moderate to small, with vertically ellip- tical pupil; nostril very large. Body subtriangular or cylindrical; scales moderately to very feebly keeled, without apical pits, in 13–19 rows at midbody, those of the vertebral series enlarged and more or less bicarinate; ventrals 192–259 (147 egbensis; 170–174 gabouensis). The condition of the lateral keel is variable, ranging from distinct to less pro- minent. Tail very short to long, subcaudals in paired, 46–122 (36 egbensis; 43 gabouensis). Hypapophyses developed throughout the vertebral column. Hemipenis bifurcating at sub- caudal scale 7, retractor muscle at subcaudal scale 23, and the sulcus divided at subcaudal scale 5. Sequence divergence of Mehelya with other file snake genera ranges from 2.1– 4.8% for 16S, 8.6–10.7% for cyt b, and 0.6–1.1% for c-mos. Mehelya forms a polytomy with Gonionotophis and Gracililima [from Broadley et al. 2018].
