Type locality: "Chickasawhay River, Leakesville, Greene County, Mississippi, USA."  
TypesHolotype: CM (Carnegie Museum) 94979, an adult male collected by R.C. Vogt, M. Pappas, and P.S. Freed on 21July 1978. 
CommentPopulations of this species have been assigned to Graptemys pearlensis.

Diet: carnivore.

One of the top five endangered turtles in North America.

Reproduction: oviparous. 
EtymologyNamed in honor of Dr. J. Whitfield Gibbons of the University of Georgia, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.
