DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): “Der Körper ist stärker dorsoventral abgeflacht als der mehr rundliche Schwanz. Den Rücken bedecken sehr kleine, granulierte, homogene Schuppen. Das Tympanum ist sichtbar. Femoralporen sind bei beiden Geschlechtern vorhanden; dagegen fehlen Kehlsäcke und Kämme völlig. Keine anderen Agamen in Südostasien sind so auf das Leben ober- und unterhalb des Erdbodens spezialisiert wie die Schmetterlingsechsen.” (Manthey & Schuster 1999). 
CommentType species: Leiolepis guttatus CUVIER 1829 is the type species of the genus Leiolepis CUVIER 1829. The genus Leiolepis CUVIER 1829 is also the type genus of the subfamily Leiolepidinae Fitzinger, 1843.

Estes et al 1988 and Grismer et al. 2016 recommend to recognize the family Leiolepidae [sic].

Diet (genus): mainly vegetarian (Peters 1971: 115).

Hybridization: Leiolepis guttata can hybridize with L. reversii (JANČÚCHOVÁ-LÁSKOVÁ et al. 2015). 
EtymologyThe name guttata is Latin for "spotted" and refers to the numerous light spots and blotches on the back of the species.
