TypesType: BMNH 1864.1.9.29 (and possibly additional specimens). 
CommentSubspecies: Lygodactylus capensis grotei is not considered as a valid species.

Type species: Hemidactylus capensis SMITH 1849 is the type species of the genus Lygodactylus GRAY 1864.

Phylogenetics: see Mezzasalma et al. 2016 for a molecular phylogeny of (mostly Malagasy species of) Lygodactylus.
