DistributionNew Zealand (except for the extreme north of the North Island and part of the central and southern South Island). Present on a number of offshore islands in Cook Strait and in the north and northeast of North Island.

Type locality: New Zealand

TypesLectotype: BMNH 1946.8.22.71, designated by Bauer (1990).
Holotype: BMNH 1946.9.8.16 [greyii] 
Diagnosis 
CommentSynonymy: Heteropholis nebulosus MCCANN 1955 has been removed from the synonymy of Hoplodactylus granulatus.

Type species: Mokopirirakau granulatus (Gray, 1845) is the type species of the genus Mokopirirakau NIELSEN et al. 2011.

Comparisons: Know et al. 2021 present a table with comparisons of the 5 species. 
EtymologyEtymology (genus): Moko-piri-ra ̄kau is the Maori name for forest gecko. Maori nouns typically have no gender, but we treat Mokopirirakau as masculine for the purposes of nomenclatural construction.
