Type locality: Manakau, Horowhenua (homotype locality)  
TypesNeotype: NMNZ RE.002457 (formerly NMNZ R.1815 and EDS.912), designated by Patterson et al. 2013.
Homotype: NMNZ R1815 (designated by HARDY 1977) 
CommentMax. snout-vent-length: 80 mm.

Synonymy: This species has been confused with O. aeneum and therefore the name ornatum (and variations have been used for aeneum as well.
