DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): “Omanosaura besitzt jederseits 2 Postnasalia und 5 bis 7 Supralabialia vor dem Suboculare. Ein Massetericum ist nie vorhanden, und das Tympanicum ist sehr klein. Das Collare ist sehr schmal, und dic Caudelia sind stark gekielt. im Unterschied zu Podarcis besitzt Omanosaura stark entwickelte Hautfalten beiderseits des Halses. Von Podarcis (sensu Arnold 1973), Archaeolacerta, Timon und Apathya unterscheidet sich die neue Untergattung durch das an seiner Vorderkante zweifach eingebuchtete Frontale und die granuläre Temporalbeschuppung, von all diesen Arten, außer Apathya, auch dadurch, daß die Supratemporalia auf der Parietalplatte liegen. Im Unterschied zu allen anderen palaearktschen Lacertidae folgen dem großen ersten Supratemporale mehrere kleinere, die stets mit abgeschrägten Rändern aufeinanderstoßen, befindet sich auf der Innenseite des Unterarms eine zusätzliche Reihe vergrößerter Schilder, und ist eine sehr stark ausgebildete Hemipenisrarmatur (sensu Arnold 1973) vorhanden. Die Anzahl der Praesakralia ist sehr konstant und niedrig (25 bei den Männchen und 26 bei den Weibchen) - der größte Teil dieser Angaben nach Arnold (1972 und 1973).” (from Lutz et al. 1986: 154, as subgenus Omanosaura). 
CommentType species: Lacerta jayakari BOULENGER 1887: 40 is the type species of the genus Omanosaura LUTZ, BISCHOFF & MAYER 1986.

EtymologyNamed after Atmaram S. Jayakar (1844-1911), Indian surgeon, sent to Muscat by the Indian Medical Service, who collected the types.

The genus was named after its occurrence in Oman and Latin “lacerta” = lizard.
