Type locality: “Penang”, restricted to “near the top of the so called Western hill on Penang, at a elevation of about 2,400 feet” [= Pulau Penang, West Malaysia]

DiagnosisDiagnosis: larger third than fourth supralabial, paired subcaudals, distinguished from other species sharing these character states by particularly low ventral (120–139) and subcaudal scale counts. [MALHOTRA et al. 2011, Appendix G] 
CommentVenomous! 
EtymologyThe species epithet, convictus, comes from Latin meaning “convicted”. The use of the epithet has nothing to do with the characteristics of the species. Rather, it relates to the incident that occured during collection of the type specimen. An ex-prisoner (convict) who was helping in the collection stepped on the snake and was bitten by the type specimen.
