|Diagnosis||Diagnosis. The new species is distinguished from P. androyensis, P. bastardi, P. ibityensis, P. lohatsara, P. maingoka, P. picta, and P. vahiny by having the nostril in contact with the rostral scale; from P. gracilis by absence of a raised vertebral ridge on the body and by shorter forelimbs which are not extending forward beyond tip of snout; from P. masobe by much smaller size (SVL up to 62 mm versus 107 mm), much smaller eyes and absence of a dorsal row of paired spines on the tail; from P. stumpffi by absence of a light line bordering at least the posterior head, absence of a light line along the upper lip, and absence of a brown stripe from the nostril to the neck; from P. tanjaka by smaller size (SVL up to 62 mm versus 102 mm); from P. vazimba by larger size (SVL up to 62 mm versus 49 mm); from P. karstophila by absence of a light marking above the forelimbs and from the two Comoran species P. sanctijohannis and P. stellata by colouration. Paroedura kloki differs from most other species of the P. oviceps clade (P. fasciata, P. homalorhina, P. hordiesi, and P. spelaea, described below) by the presence of spinous tubercles on the proximal whorls of the tail (versus absent); furthermore from P. homalorhina by shorter limbs and a less slender general appearance, and from P. fasciata by slightly larger size (SVL up to 62 mm versus 49 mm) and lack of light transversal bands. Paroedura kloki is morphologically most similar to P. oviceps from which it differs by a higher number of spinous tail whorls at the proximal portion of the tail (ca. 8 versus ca. 4), and by more expressed dorsal tubercles, especially in the neck region (Fig. 7A). In addition, P. kloki differs from all other species in the genus by strong genetic differences (Fig. 1, Table 1), except for P. vahiny for which DNA sequences are not yet available.|
|Etymology||The specific epithet is a patronym honouring Dr. Pascal R. J. Klok (Viersen, Germany) in recognition of his financial support for taxonomic research and nature conservation projects in Madagascar through the BIOPAT initiative (http://biopat.de/).|
