Subspecies: RODRIGUEZ-SCHETTINO et al. 2013 do not distinguish between subspecies, but see Schwartz 1970: 113 for a map of the Cuban subspecies.

Synonymy: Ameiva auberi festiva Garrido, 1975 is preoccupied by Cnemidophorus (= Ameiva) festivus Lichtenstein and Von Martens, 1856. 
EtymologyNamed after Professor Pedro Alejandro Auber (1786-1843), a Cuban botanist and naturalist of French origin (née Pierre Alexandre Auber).

Pholidoscelis auberi zugi was named in honour of Professor Dr. George Zug, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (Washington DC, USA). For biographical details see Mitchell 2018.
