Type locality: 2.0 km E La Descubierta, Independencia Province, Republica Dominicana.

TypesHolotype: TCWC 51046; paratypes: TCWC, UF/FSM, USNM 
DiagnosisDefinition. A subspecies of Ph.wirshingi ciharacterized by the combination of: 1)moderate to small size (males to 56 mm, females to 61 mm snout-vent lengths); 2) 2-5 (X = 2.8, Mo = 3) postmental scales in the first row; 3) 5-10 postmental scales (X = 6.8) in the second row;4) preorbital snout pattern absent, although the individual scales are slightly darker apically than basally, to give a uniformly mosaic snout; 5) juveniles banded dark brown with darker edges and without included pale tan scales within the bands (SCHWARTZ 1979: 422).

Based on mtDNA sequence differences and allopatry WEISS & HEDGES 2007 elevated the (allopatric) subspecies of P. wirshingi to full species status.
