Diagnosis | Description (genus): Pinoyscincus can be identified by the following combination of characters: (1) body size medium to large (> 42 mm SVL); (2) paravertebral scale rows 56–80; (3) midbody scale rows 30–44; and (4) subdigital lamellae 17–26. In addition to these scale characters, species in this genus share a unique morphology of the hemipenis. The main shaft of the hemipenis, before the bifurcation, is wide with a large bulbous lobe on each lateral side of the shaft (Fig. 6 in LINKEM, DIESMOS & BROWN 2011). Diagnosis (Sphenomorphus palustris). “Frontoparietal divided; 6 supraoculars, the last 2 divided; lower eyelids scaly; ear opening large, round; tympanum not deeply sunk; frontal slightly longer than the parietal region; 40 scale rows around the body; side of head barred with white.” (Taylor 1915: 102) Description of type (Sphenomorphus palustris): Taylor 1915: 102 |
Comment | Synonymy mainly after BROWN & ALCALA 1980. Many specimens originally identified as jagori may be in fact S. abdictus. See that entry. Specimens from Dinagat, N-Luzon, and other small islands which have been identified as S. jagori need to be re-examined (fide BROWN & ALCALA 1980). Subspecies: Sphenomorphus jagori divergens is now Pinoyscincus coxi divergens. Type species: Lygosoma (Hinulia) Jagori PETERS 1864 is the type species of the genus Pinoyscincus LINKEM, DIESMOS & BROWN 2011. Distribution: not in Sulawesi, fide Koch 2012: 317 |
Etymology | Named after Professor Dr. Fedor Jagor (1817-1900), a German ethnographer and naturalist who traveled in Asia, including the Philippines, collecting for Museum fur Naturkunde Berlin. Etymology (genus): The word pinoy is a commonly used Tagalog term of endearment amongst Filipinos, referring to an individual Filipino or the nation as a whole. We use it here in conjunction with the Latin scincus, meaning lizard, to name a clade of skinks found on the Philippine Archipelago. |
