Synonymy partly after VILLA et al. 1988, who present also some color plates (86-87).

Habitat: terrestrial

Distribution: not in Yucatan state (Mexico), fide Gonzalez-Sanchez et al. 2017.

Type species: Bothrops nasutus BOCOURT 1868 is the type species of the genus Porthidium COPE 1871. 
EtymologyNamed after the Latin nasutus meaning "having a large nose," in reference to the upturned snout of the species.
