CommentSynonymy after PETERS & OREJAS-MIRANDA 1970.

ZAHER et al. (2008) nicely illustrate the ontogenetic shift of color patterns in this species.

Distribution: This species has been reported from Peru, but without specific locality (T. Doan, pers. comm. 30 Apr 2012). See map in Nogueira et al. 2019. 
EtymologyNamed after Maximilian Alexander Philip, Prince zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867), an aristocratic explorer. After studying natural history at Georg-August-Universitat Göttingen, he entered the Prussian army (1802), ultimately becoming a Major-General.
