Synonymy: Paraphyletic with other Tupinambis forms (see Fitzgerald et al. 1999). FITZGERALD (1999) also noticed that T. duseni and T. rufescens are genetically very similar but morphologically different. PRESCH (1973) concluded that T. duseni was a junior synonym of T. rufescens while PÉRES & COLLI (2004) consider both as distinct species.
Distribution: See map in Oliviera-Drummond et al. 2014. Probably also in Bolivia (fide LANGSTROTH 2005).
Diagnosis: (1) max. SVL 410 mm, (2) two loreal scales, (3) 14-26 total femoral pores, (4) 84-105 dorsals, (5) 114-151 scales around midbody, (6) 12-17d fourth finger lamellae, (7) scales on nape distinctly larger than dorsals, (8) dorsal scales convex, (9) row of scales between mentals and infralabials present, (10) temporals same size as dorsals, (11) 18-26 prefemorals (after PÉRES & COLLI 2004).
Authorship. This species is also sometimes attributed to LÖNNBERG 1896. We haven’t checked the 1896 paper but the 1910 paper does describe T. duseni as new.
Similar species: T. rufescens.
