Diagnosis 
CommentSubspecies: Leaché and Cole (2007) presented evidence for hybridization between S. cowlesi and S. tristichus. Leache & Reeder 2002 also included S. bellii (= S. edbellii) in the synonymy of S. cowlesi. C. u. speari is a synonym of S. cowlesi (A. Leaché, pers. comm., 8 Oct 2021). 
EtymologyNamed after the late Raymond B. Cowles of the University of California at Los Angeles, famed for his studies of desert reptiles and their temperature relations.

speari: The genitive singular patronym honors Norman E. Spear, Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he is Co-director of the Center for Developmental Psychology, and was a mentor for David Chiszar.
