Type locality: Llano de las Flores (12 mi N Ixtlán de Juárez), Sierra de Juárez, Distrito Ixtlán, Oaxaca, Mexico.

Diagnosis 
CommentGroup: S. formosus group (sensu lato, fide PÉREZ-RAMOS & SALDAÑA DE LA RIVA 2008) 
EtymologyThe name is an adjective from the Greek kryptos, "secret, hidden”, and was applied in reference to the extreme convergent similarity of the species to the sympatric Sceloporus formosus.
