dugesii: Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit. Type locality: Colima.

intermedius: Guanajuato, Michoacan, San Luis Potosi. Type locality: La Noria, near Zamora, hacienda of D. Epifanio Jiménez (Michoacan).

pleurolepis: Type Locality: North of Río Santiago, Jalisco, Mexico.

DiagnosisDiagnosis: Smith 1939: 234 
CommentSubspecies: MARTINEZ-MENDEZ & MENDEZ-DE LA CRUZ 2007 suggested not to recognize the subspecies of S. dugesii as they are hardly differentiated. 
EtymologyThis name honors the collector, Alfredo Dugès, who often is called "the father of Mexican herpetology", and who was the first one to summarize the Mexican herpetofauna in Linnaean terms.

intermedius: The Latin intermedius, "intermediate", was applied with the thought that its scalation was intermediate between that of S. grammicus and S. microlepidotus.

pleurolepis: The Greek pleura, "side," and lepis, "scale," refer to the lateral scales, which "are twice or thrice as large as those on the back, and keeled" (Günther, 1890: 74).
