nelsoni: Pacific slopes from SW Chihuahua to NW Jalisco; sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit. Type locality: Plomosas, Sinaloa.

CommentSceloporus nelsoni barrancorum is not listed in LINER 1994.

The validity of S. n. barrancorum was denied by Hardy & McDiarmid (1969) but was later conclusively substantiated by Tanner (1987).

Sceloporus nelsoni coeruleus TANNER & ROBISON 1959 is a junior homonym of Sceloporus ornatus caeruleus Smith (1937d), and hence an unavailable senior synonym of Sceloporus nelsoni barrancarum TANNER & ROBINSON. 
EtymologyThe Latin genitive singular honors Edward W. Nelson, who was first employed by the U. S. Biological Survey in 1890, and was appointed Chief in 1916. He shared with Goldman a ten-year survey of Mexican terrestrial vertebrates.

S. n. barrancorum has been named after the genitive plural case, Latinized from the Spanish barranca, referring to the habitat on steep-sided canyons. The name is thus properly spelled barrancarum, not barrancorum.
