prezygus: SW Guatemala, Mexico (Chiapas). Type Locality: Conjob (Conjab in original description, Axtell, 1960), between San Bartolomé and Comitán, 5300 ft. elevation (16°19'N, 92°18'W), Chiapas, Mexico.

DiagnosisDiagnosis: Smith 1939: 212 
CommentSubspecies: Sceloporus serrifer cyanogenys COPE 1885 has been elevated to full species status. Sceloporus serrifer plioporus SMITH 1939: 212 has been synonymized with S. cyanogenys by MARTINEZ-MENDEZ & MENDEZ-DE LA CRUZ 2007.

Distribution: The Cuchumatanes Mountains populations currently recognized as S. s. prezygus should be synonymized into S. serrifer (Martínez-Méndez et al. 2012). Not in Nuevo León fide Nevárez-de los Reyes et al. 2016. Not in Querétaro fide Tepos-Ramírez et al. 2023.

Hybridization: Sceloporus serrifer serrifer intergrades with plioporus around Balchacaj, Campeche according to SMITH & TAYLOR 1950. Synonymy modified after SMITH & TAYLOR 1950. C. serrifer and S. (s.) cyanogenys intergrade (OLSON 1987). In areas where the species are sympatric, such as the northern Yucatan Peninsula, S. serrifer is terrestrial and S. lundelli strictly arboreal. 
EtymologyNamed after the Latin serra, "saw," and fero, "to bear," refer to the strongly mucronate, "saw-toothed," dorsal and lateral scales, and to those between the nuchal pocket and a point below lower edge of auditory meatus.

prezygus: The Latin pre-, "going before," and Latinized form of Greek zygos, "yoked," refer to the phylogenetic position of the species, thought to have been near the ancestral origin of the poinsettii group.
