spinigerus: lower west coast and adjacent hinterland of Western Australia; Type locality: Houtman Abrolhos, WA.

inornatus: SE coast and interior of Western Australia. Type locality: Frank Hann National Park, Western Australia, 32°58'S, 120° 06'E.

TypesHolotype: lost; formerly Zoological Society (London) 383, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), in error. Kluge (1967) erroneously considered that BMNH 64.10.6.7 (formerly xxi.5a), from Abrolhos, collected by J. Gilbert (one of two specimens collected by Gilbert from that locality, the other BMNH xxi.3b) as the holotype.
Holotype: WAM 78354, collected by B.G. Muir on 17 November 1980 [inornatus] 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A subspecies of D. spinigerus with a broad black median stripe on back and tail. (The species is distinguishable from all other Diplodactylus by the combination of two rows of long blackish spines on tail and very short or no spines above eye.) [from STORR 1988: 178] 
CommentGroup: Diplodactylus strophurus group (subgenus Strophurus) 
EtymologyNamed after Latin “spini” (= thorn) and “ger-” (= bearing).

D. s. inornatus was named after the Latin word for unadorned.
