DistributionMexico (Cuatro Cienegas basin of Coahuila)

Type locality: "Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila," Mexico.
Reproductionoviparous. Exhibits temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD) fide Cornejo-Páramo et al. 2020 (and references therein).
TypesHolotype: FMNH 41234 (incorrectly cited as FMNH 55656 by Milstead 1969:81).
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A Terrapene with the characteristic plastral hinge, not evidently more closely related to any one of the known species than to others. Distinguished by its low elongate carapace, un spotted shell and soft parts, toes 5-4, and beak hooked and notched, dorsal keel vestigial (Schmidt & Owens 1944).
CommentPhylogenetics: T. coahuila, carolina, and triunguis are closely related phylogenetically, although they are often treated as separate species. Genetically, they may be more appropriately treated as subspecies (see Thomson et al. 2021).
EtymologyNamed after the type locality.
