DistributionTurkey (Mountains at the Bolkar Da region), Turkey (central south coast), Greece (Rhodes, Ikaria, Pentanissos)

Type locality: “Zebil Bulgar Dagh (Cilician Taurus), altitude 4000 feet.”

bileki: Turkey; Type locality: Ilgin, Vil Konya, Türkei.
Reproductionoviparous
TypesHolotype: BMNH ? (Eiselt & Schmidtler 1987 mention multiple syntypes, without collection information)
Holotype: NMW 26759:5, 39 additional paratypes in GNM, NMW, SMF and ZDEU [bileki]
Holotype: ZSM 59/1983, female, paratypes: ZSM, BMNH, GNM, NMW and ZDEU [ibrahimi]
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Lizards possessing the following features found only in a minority of other Lacertini: 7–8 posterior presacral vertebrae with short ribs, sternal fontanelle often weakly heart-shaped, pattern of tail vertebrae C-type, often five upper labial scales in front of subocular, masseteric scale frequently small or absent, preanal scale relatively small and bordered by more than one row of smaller scales, broad pale dorsolateral stripes often present, hemipenial lobes relatively long with large outer sulcal lips on lobes. Other more widely distributed features include head and body not strongly depressed, seven premaxillary teeth in adults, usual number of presacral vertebrae in males 26, inscriptional ribs frequently absent, tail brightly coloured in hatchlings; hemipenial microornamentation of crown-shaped tubercles (from Arnold et al. 2007: 35).
CommentType Species: Zootoca danfordi is the type species of the genus Anatololacerta ARNOLD et al. 2007.

Subspecies: The status of Lacerta oertzeni ibrahimi EISELT & SCHMIDTLER 1986 remains unclear. See Bellati et al. 2014 for a discussion. The taxon could also belong to budaki, and would then even have priority over budaki.
Börner (1974) described Lacerta danfordi quanttaylori from Rhodos in a non-peer-reviewed, self-published paper. Bellati et a. 2014 synonymized this form with pelasgiana.

Synonymy: after MEHELY 1909 and Bellati et al. 2014. The names Anatololacerta danfordi bileki and A. oertzeni ibrahimi were used by BELLATI et al. 2014 although these authors concluded that they shouldd be included in Anatololacerta danfordi.

Distribution: see map in Karakasi et al. 2021: 26 (Fig. S1)

Etymology: A. d. bileki is named after Karl Bilek, preparator at the NMW in Vienna.
EtymologyNamed after Charles G. Danford (1843-1928), a geologist, paleontologist, zoologist, artist, traveler, and explorer

The genus was named after the occurrence of at least some of the species in Anatolia. “Lacerta” is the Latin word for lizard.
