Diagnosis | DESCRIPTION: Size moderate (SVL in males to 70 mm, in females to 59 mm); 5 rows of loreals; scales between supraorbitals 1; scales between interparietal and supraorbital semicircles 3; 5 postrostrals; 4 postmentals; suboculars in contact with supralabials; dorsals granular, pointed, keeled, 2 middorsal rows slightly enlarged; ventrals large, imbricate, cycloid, keeled; supradigital scales carinate; tail usually uncrested, compressed, verticillate. Dorsum pale (white, yellowish, greenish gray, very pale gray) with black spots; lower sides marbled blackish; a pale, oblique lateral line below which color much lighter; venter whitish with blue-gray and yellow mottling; dewlap orange, rusty orange, brick-red with mustard center, rusty brown, orange-brown (Schwartz & Henderson 1991: 242). |

Etymology | Named after Dr. Melville "Mel" Thurston Cook (1869-1952), a botanist and entomologist who became Director, Insular Experiment Station, Rio Piedras, part of Universidad de Puerto Rico: He joined the faculty of Rutgers University (1910) to teach botany and later moved to the New Jersey College for Women (1918). |
