Type locality: Parador Selva Negra on México Highway 195 (approximately 0.5 km W Pinabeto), Municipality of Rayón at the border with Municipality of Pueblo Nuevo Solistahuacán,
Chiapas México; 17° 12' 58" N, 92° 57' 47" W; 1992 m elevation.

CommentSpecies group: Norops auratus Species Group (fide Nicholson et al. 2012) 
EtymologyNamed after Hobart Muir Smith (1912–2013), the American herpetologist considered to be the father of Mexican herpetology, among his many other accomplishments. See also Chiszar et al. 2004 for biographical notes.
