Type locality: Murici, Fazenda Bananeira (9° 14’ S, 35° 48’ W), 640 m elevation.

CommentVenomous!

Conservation: one of the 30 most endangered viper species (Maritz et al. 2016). 
EtymologyNamed after the area where the new species is known to occur named "Mata de Murici" (= Murici Forest), which is an allusion to the common name of one of the most frequent trees in the region.
