Type locality: Gewani, Ethiopian Danakil, Ethiopia  
TypesHolotype: BMNH 1961.1774. Paratypes: BMNH (11), ZFMK 33624, male, Ethiopia: Addis Abeba; ZFMK 19131, female, Ethopia: Arussi: Asella; ZFMK 35900-901, 2 females, Ethiopia: near Gondar, no collector, 1979. 
CommentLARGEN & SPAWLS 2006 synonymized Chamaeleo calcaricarens with C. africanus. 
EtymologyNamed after L.: calcar, spur; carens, active present participle of carere = to lack: lacking spurs, denoting the absence of tarsal spurs in males of this species as compared with the closely related and spur-bearing males of C. africanus (Charles Klaver, pers. comm., 11 Jan 2023).
