Lectotype: MNHN-RA 2907, designated by Wells & Wellington (1985). A subsequent designation of MNHN 2906 as lectotype by Brown (1991) is invalid due to the previous lectotype. However, Shea et al. 2021 requested the ICZN to fix the type designation by Brown 1991 because MNHN-RA 2907 was identified as Emoia nigra by Brown (1991) and Shea et al. (2021) [freycineti]

DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Small to medium-sized (snout-vent length up to 118 mm) skinks with supranasals and a clear window in the movable lower eyelid. Frontoparietals fused and often incorporating the interparietal; clutch size in most species constant, 2, but 2 species (nigra and samoensis) with variable clutch sizes, up to 5 (Greer 1968, 1974: 19). 
CommentSynonymy: Mostly after BROWN 1991 (who also preliminarily synonymized Lygosoma buergersi VOGT 1932). Mabouya jerdoniana STOLICZKA 1870 was described twice, in two different papers. Gongylus (Eumeces) freycinetii was placed in the synonymy of Scincus atrocostatus (at the time either Emoa atrocostata or Lygosoma [Emoa] atrocostata; now Emoia atrocostata) by Girard (1858: 264) and Boulenger (1887: 295) and remained in that synonymy (with one exception) until Brown (1991: 10) resurrected the name for a subspecies of E. atrocostata.

Conservation: This species is classified as “vulnerable” in Japan (Ota 2000).

Type species: Emoia atrocostata is the type species of the genus Emoia GRAY 1845 (fide GREER 1974).

EtymologyPresumably named after the lateral black (or dark) band, from Latin “ater” = black, and Latin “costa” = rib.

Emoia atrocostata freycineti was apparently named after Louis-Claude de Saulces de Freycinet, commander of the Uranie, on an even earlier French expedition to the Pacific (1817–1820), on which Quoy and Gaimard were also naturalists (Shea et al. 2021).
