DistributionGuatemala

Type locality: Espiritu Santo, 17 km E El Rancho, Departamento de El Progreso, Guatemala, elevation 300 m
Reproductionoviparous
TypesHolotype: UTA R-15000; an adult female, collected on 10 September 1984, by D. Vasquez.
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Heloderma h. charlesbogerti differs from all other known populations of H. horridum by consistently possessing greatly enlarged preanal plates in females (Fig. 3 in Campbell & Vannini 1988). Heloderma h. charlesbogerti may be distinguished from the geographically most proximate population, H. h. alvarezi, by possessing a black dorsum in adults which is distinctly marked with irregular pale yellow spots that commence posterior to the insertion of the frontlimbs and become somewhat larger and more numerous posteriorly; an incomplete pale rosette or wavy band lies on either side of the body directly above the insertion of the hind limbs. It may be further distinguished from H. h. alvarezi in that it has 7 rather than usually 6 interorbitals, 50-53 (x = 51.8) transverse scale rows between axilla and groin, and a relatively greater hind limb span (Table 2). In specimens of H. h. horridum from the Pacific versant of Chiapas, Mexico, the pale spots are smaller, more numerous, and extend anteriorly to the level of the insertion of the forelimb, and the ground color is not as dark as in H. h. charlesbogerti, being a dark brown over much of the body. Heloderma h. exasperatum differs in having the supranasal usually in contact with the postnasal, the second supralabial always in contact with the nasal, 8-9 interorbitals, and a complex pattern where the extent of the pale coloration equals or exceeds the dark coloration. Heloderma h. charlesbogerti possesses a broad, wedge-shaped mental scale, truncated posteriorly, rather than the shield-shaped or elongate triangular mental associated with some northern subspecies.
