Diagnosis
CommentSynonymy: Bauer et al. (2008) synonymized Teratolepis with Hemidactylus which rendered Hemidactylus fasciatus (Blyth, 1853) a junior secondary homonym of Hemidactylus fasciatus Gray 1842. Bauer et al. thus suggested a nomen novum, Hemidactylus imbricatus.

Publication date: Bauer et al. (2008) state that Blyth’s (also cited as Blyth in Jerdon) paper most likely has been published in 1853, not 1854 as often cited, although the volume itself is dated “1854”.

Günther (1869) erected the genus Teratolepis to accommodate Homonota fasciata BLYTH 1853, emphasizing its bizarre scalation (relatively large, flat, weakly imbricate polygonal scales on the dorsum and very large imbricate scales on tail, which is typically swollen basally.

Distribution: Records from India and Sri Lanka are most likely erroneous (BAUER et al. 2008).
EtymologyThe specfic epithet refers to the imbricate scales of the dorsum, and particularly the tail of this species.
