Type locality: Abdallah = Abdulla, north of Webi Shebeli, Ethiopia.

DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): “Maxillary short, bearing 8-10 teeth, which increase only slightly in size posteriorly and are followed, after a short diastema, by two slightly enlarged fangs (Bogert, 1940, Fig. 15E); teeth on dentary small and subequal. Head depressed and distinct from the neck; eye small, with a round pupil (not vertically elliptic as stated in Boettger's original diagnosis and by several subsequent authors); elongate nasal shield semidivided by an oblique cleft extending from the nostril, which is pierced vertically or dorsolaterally. Body cylindrical; scales smooth with single apical pits in 17-17-13 rows; ventrals rounded; anal divided; tail moderate to long; subcaudals paired. Hemipenes simple, papilliform, with undivided sulcus. Oviparous.” (Broadley 2000: 5) 
CommentSynonymy: BOGERT (1940) considered H. kelleri as congeneric with H. nototaenia.

Type species: Hemirhagerrhis kelleri BOETTGER 1893: 129 is the type species of the genus Hemirhagerrhis BOETTGER 1893.

Habitat: partly arboreal (Harrington et al. 2018).

EtymologyNamed after Aleksandr N. Kaznakov, a Russian naturalist who became Director of the Caucasus Museum.
