DistributionMexico (Upper tributaries of Río Grijalva in the interior of Chiapas), adjacent Guatemala.

Type locality: La Libertad, Chiapas, near Río Cuilco where it crosses the Gutemalan border.

TypesHolotype: FMNH 100006 (was EHT-HMS 15327) 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A member of the undulata group possessing paired preanals, abruptly enlarged gulars, lacking a secondary row of superciliary granules, and with supraoculars broadly contacting the frontoparietals. The adult male pattern differs from that of all other forms of A. undulata, in having the upper lateral light spots merged with the dorsolateral light line to form a continuous light band, the dorsal border of which is regular, the ventral irregular and giving rise to the vertical light bars. Possibly differs from u. stuarti, the most closely related form, in having more numerous lamellae under the fourth toe (75.5% with more 28 or more). Differs from all other races in that the extreme lateral gulars are en larged.” (Smith & Laufe 1946: 47). 
CommentDistribution of subspecies mainly from SMITH & TAYLOR 1950. See map in Smith & Laufe 1946 (Fig. 7) and Meza-Lázaro et al. 2015 (Fig. 1). Not in Nuevo León fide Nevárez-de los Reyes et al. 2016.

Subspecies: Echternacht (1971) suggested not to recognize any subspecies. By contrast, Meza-Lázaro et al. 2015 elevated all subspecies of H. undulatus to (evolutionary) species status, which is followed by many recent authors.
