Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Nostril pierced at the posterior edge of the nasal, bordered by a postnasal that is in contact with the first supralabial. Dorsal scales with single apical pits in 17- 17-15 rows, the reduction taking place well before the vent; ventrals 153-165 in males, 162-173 in females; subcaudals 31-40 in males, 22-32 in females (Broadley 1996: 20).
Coloration: Dark brown to black, a fragmented broken white band round snout, each dorsal scale stippled with white at the apex, ventrum uniformly dark (Broadley 1996: 20).
Skull: very elongate, strong parietal crests are convergent posteriorly (Broadley 1996: 20).
Size. Largest male (ZMB 17224 - Dar es Salaam) 283 + 49 = 332 mm; largest female (NMW 14469 - Kingani River) 410 + 38 = 448 mm. Tanzanian snakes seem to be smaller than those from the Sudan (Broadley & Hughes, 1993, Broadley 1996: 20). |
