Type locality: Haute-Casamance (lieu de provenance exact uncertain, probablement environs de Velingara, 13° 09’ N, 14° 06’ W).

Diagnosis 
CommentM. gabouensis has a characteristically small number of ventrals (172-176) which distinguishes it from other Mehelya: M. poensis (227-262), M. guirali (236-262), M. stenophthalmus (189-228), M. crossi (220-240), M. capensis (193-241), M. vernayi (256-263), M. laurenti (202), M. riggenbachi (229).

M. nyassae has 167-181 ventrals but a smaller number of sub-caudals (43 vs. 51-79 in M. gabouensis). M . egbensis has 147-152 ventrals but only 34-36 subcaudals). 
EtymologyNamed after the old kingdom of the “Gabou” who inhabited the region of Casamance.
