Type locality: "Egypt: St. Catherine's Monastery area, Wadi el Sheikh" [= Wadi el Sheikh, vicinity of St. Catherine's Monastery (28°33'N, 33°59'E, elevation 1585 m), South Sinai Govern., NE Egypt]

CommentSynonymy: PERRY 2012: 97 considered Platyceps saharicus a synonym of Platyceps tessellata, but the status of the latter is not clear (Guy Sinaiko, pers. comm. 6 Nov 2017). Perry 1985 announced a new subspecies without actually describing or naming it. Platyceps tessellata is not clearly diagnosable from either rhodorhachis or saharicus (Sinaiko et al. 2018) and thus a nomen dubium.

EtymologyNamed after its distribution area. In most of its distribution area the records are rather scattered.
