Type locality: Panzos, on banks of Rio Polochic, Guatemala.  
TypesHolotype: MNHN-RA 1592 (PETERS 1960 stated that the type is unknown)
Syntypes: USNM 30614-30616 [Bothriopsis proboscideus] 

Synonymy partly after VILLA et al. 1988, who present also some color plates (86-87).

Habitat: terrestrial

Distribution: not in Yucatan state (Mexico), fide Gonzalez-Sanchez et al. 2017.

Type species: Bothrops nasutus BOCOURT 1868 is the type species of the genus Porthidium COPE 1871.
