DistributionAustralia (New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia), sandy deserts of Central and Western Australian.

Type locality: Nicol Bay, Western Australia. Neotype locality: Yule River, WA (20° 40’ S, 118° 21’ E).  
Reproductionoviparous 
TypesNeotype: WAM R102063, designated by James et al 2001. The holotype, SMNS = KNS 2259 was considered lost fide Schlüter & Hallermann 1997 but still extant fide A. Kupfer, pers. comm., 27 March 2019.
Holotype: BMNH (lost fide KLUGE 1974) [baileyi]
Holotype: AMS [territorianus] 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: James et al. 2001: 47 
CommentSynonymy: after JAMES et al. 2001 (who also resurrected P. schraderi from the synonymy of P. nigriceps).

Subspecies: Pygopus nigriceps schraderi BOULENGER 1913 is now treated as valid species.

Limb morphology: Limbless. 
EtymologyPresumably named after the Latin niger (black) plus ceps (head), referring to the dark head of the species. (G. Shea, pers. comm., 9 Feb 2024)
