DistributionSolomon Islands (Buka, Fauro, Shorthand Islands, Bougainville [DAHL 1986])

Type locality: Faro Island (= Fauro), Solomon Islands
Reproductionoviparous
TypesHolotype: BMNH 1946.1.20.66
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Particularly distinguished from Denisonia Krefft (for D. maculatus and D. devisi, if these forms are specifically distinct from each other) by the presence of a lateral process of the palatine, by the less flounce-like nature of the hemipenial calyces and by the separation of the calyces from the large spines by a zone of small and crowded spines, by the constant entry of the temporolabial scute into the border of the mouth as the sixth of seven supralabials. and by the divided anal scute. Distinguished from Drepanodontis Worrell 1961a, Austrelaps Worrell 1963a, Suta Worrell 1961b, Parasuta Worrell 1961b, and Unechis Worrell 1961b (all included in " Denisonia" of Boulenger, 1896) by absence of fibres of the adductor externus superficialis arising from quadrate, by distinctly forked hemipenis, by presence of lateral process of palatine and by strong curvature of palatine, and by broad entry of temporolabial into border of mouth. Distinguished from Drysdalia Worrell 19616 and Cryptophis Worrell 1961b (included in " Denisonia" of Boulenger, 1896) by broadness of the origin of the adductor externus superficilis, by forked hemipenis, by lateral process of palatine and curvature of palatine, and by broad entry of temporolabial into border of mouth. Most closely related, on one hand, to Ogmodon Peters and, on the other hand, to Loveridgelaps new genus (for "Micropechis" elapoides); differing most conspicuously from Ogmodon in presence of a broad diastema between fangs and non-canaliculate maxillary teeth, by broad origin of adductor externus superficialis, by distinct furcation of hemipenis, and by separation of prefrontals on midline. Differing from Loveridgelaps most conspicuously in long pterygoid tooth-row of teeth as large as those of palatine, in more curved palatine bone, entry of sphenoid into anterior orifice of cavum epiptericum, and more conspicuously and abruptly enlarged zone of hook-like spines on hemipenis.” (McDowell 1970: 151)
