Diagnosis | DESCRIPTION: Size moderate (SVL in males to 37 mm, in females to 39 mm); dorsals small, acute, strongly keeled, flattened, imbricate, axilla to groin 33-58; no area of middorsal granules or granular scales; ventrals smooth, cycloid, imbricate, axilla to groin 26-43; dorsal caudal scales keeled basally, smooth distally, acute, imbricate, flat-lying, ventral caudal scales smooth, cycloid, enlarged midventrally; snout blunt, short, broad; snout scales small, broad, flat, juxtaposed; 2 postnasals; 0-2 (mode 1) internasals; upper labials to mideye 3-4 (strongly modally 3); gular scales variable, from keeled to smooth, but keeling (if present) weak, not prominent, on only a few scales; chest scales smooth; midbody scales 48-84; escutcheon with short, compact, central area and extensions onto thighs to near underside of knee, 4-9 x 12-29. Dorsal pattern variable both between and within populations; weakly sexually dichromatic, often obscured by pattern variation within a population; dorsum medium brown to dark purplish brown in both sexes; dorsal pattern varies from rather uniform and fine flecking to heavy, dark, and light flecking and/or dotting (= giving "salt-and-pepper" effect), to large, discrete, but usually diffusely edged dark spots, which may fuse to give pattern of longitudinal markings; adult females occasionally with a pair of vague, paler dorsolateral lines (remnants of juvenile pattern); no scapular markings; head pattern variable, from absent to a weakly to prominently delineated figure composed of (maximally) a broad, postocular U and heavy, discrete, dark spots on snout and neck, snout spots often intermixed with scattered white to pale gray scales giving "frosted" effect; iris brown, blue, or gray (from Schwartz & Henderson 1991: 483). |
